Ant Identity
With more than 700 species in the United States, ant identification can be quite a challenge. Start by looking for trails. Ants very rarely travel alone and are usually spotted when they’re hunting as a colony along paths that have been well established. When you’ve found a trail, look at the sizes of the ants. Are they identical or do they vary in size? Also observe when the ants are active—during the day or at night? Look for nests at the end of trails—especially in areas with soil. Soil nests have distinct shapes or patterns depending on the ant species.
Carpenter ants are among the most commonly seen ants in and around homes. They can be found at both high elevations and sea level. These ants often enter homes through various pathways such as firewood, open doors, outside wires, or overhanging branches. Even small cracks or crevices that seem too tiny can serve as entry points.
If you spot carpenter ants outside, check nearby trees, old stumps, or driveway cracks, especially areas with moisture, as this creates an ideal nesting environment. Carpenter ants prefer to nest in soft, decayed wood where they carve out tunnel-like galleries. Although they nest in wood, they don’t actually eat it.
Their diet mainly consists of sugary substances like honey, spilled sweet drinks, or even other insects. A single colony can forage up to 100 feet from the nest, often using the same trail repeatedly to transport food back.
